Caserías, hórreos and villages: Carreño is not just sea
THE COUNTRYSIDE
[Provisional text, subject to review by the Municipality.]
Far from the coast, Carreño is green and rural: Caserías, hórreos y paneras, meadows and small villages that preserve Asturian architecture and traditional customs.
The Carreño de Clarín
Leopoldo Alas, ‘Clarín’, greened in Carreño almost his entire life, in the fifth family member of La Rebollada, in Guimarán. The meadows, peasants, clerics and villages of the municipality went on to its pages: up to 14 of his works refer to Carreño, including ‘La Regenta’, where Candás appears under the name Palomares, and the stories ‘Doña Berta’, ‘Boroña’ and ‘Viaje Round’.
These references are concentrated in three areas: Candás, where he took the summer baths; The Rebollada, Logrezana and Prendes, around their home; and El Empalme, where the municipality was entering from Gijón, Avilés and Oviedo.
The three stories are available on foot on the Clarinian Routes today, and their brochures are available on leaflets.
