Sculpture of ‘La Marinera’

Work by Antonio Rodríguez García Antón.

This is a wooden carving, dated around 1933, with a hint of psychological and expressive expression, in which the woman’s stamp is used as an encouragement for tragedy and anxiety in a profound human sense. This figure was reproduced in fused bronze and placed in the current Helio Brotherhood Square. The woman’s face expresses all the distress of the wife of a sailor who has not yet returned from the sea. On the other hand, the woman’s rubbish plagued by the same wind gusts that threaten her husband’s life are also at the service of the desperation and fear movement that permeates the whole figure. This emotion is accentuated by the presence of a small, half-bare child who, with a foot placed on her motherland and grasping her mother’s skirts, asks to be taken to reassure her, as the expression of the child’s face reflects the insecurity of the child who does not understand what happens but feels it.
