Parishes celebrations
OTHER FESTIVALS AND TRADITIONS
In addition to the Candás festivals, Carreño parishes celebrate their own festivals throughout the year. These are two of the most prominent.
The Remedies in Guimarán
Our Lord of Remedies is the patron of the municipality. The festival takes place on the Sunday following the Christ of Candás (14 September), with a solemn outdoor festival in front of the sanctuary.
The sanctuary was founded in 1620 by the priest Juan González León, son of the parish of Guimarán, to care for walkers and neighbours. He lifted it at his own expense at La Carbayera, at the crossing of the royal paths from Gijón to Avilés and from Candás to Oviedo. Following the Depreciation of Mendizabal, she was integrated into the parish of San Esteban de Guimarán.
The image was canonically crowded on 27 September 1959, in front of the sanctuary’s façade. On that day, the anthem was released to the Virgin, with the lyrics of Marino Busto and music from master Antuña.
The Ramu orphanage
In Los Remedios, Ramu remains an established tradition in Asturias: thank you for a fulfilled petition. Ramu is a wooden structure in the shape of a prism or cone, decorated with bread, flowers, green branches and ribbons, which is carried on andas while the singing mugs are accompanied by panderets and drums.
Here, Ramu is a collective one: it is offered by the municipality as a whole, and goes beyond the point where the rosemaries that move from Candás to the neighbours of the rural area are located. At the end of the mast, the ofrenda is sung and Ramu is auctioned to bread; it is rounded off with the large thread and the blossom bolt that crown it.
San Antón festival in Albandi
The parish of Albandi celebrates the St Anton Festival, its patron saint, every 17 January. It is one of the first festivals of the year in the municipality of Carreño.
As in other patronage festivals in parishes, the celebration revolves around religious events in honour of the Holy and the meeting of neighbours.
