Pre-historic tunnels at the top of the woodland
MONTE AREO AND ITS MEGALITHIC NECROPOLIS
The Arreo Mount is one of the most important megalytic necropolis in Asturias, declared a site of cultural interest: a set of tunnels and dolphins raised in the Neolithic region from 5000 BC, distributed over the top of the saw.
The archaeological route
The route begins in the Aula del Neolitico, climbs to the mountain by Fancornio and stops in the viewpoint of the Peña'l Carro, looking ahead to the Carreño valleys. From there it continues to the two main painful areas: EL Cierru los Llanos and Les Huelgues de San Pablo.
There is also an area of wetlands in the mountains, the berries of Selmo, where the Resecu wetland of botanical interest stands out, as well as a recreational area. It can be lowered through the Cespedera neighbourhood towards Santa Eulalia del Valle, where there is a water mill and several Carreño style hórreos and paneras.
- Approximate duration: 2.5 hours.
- Difficulty: low, for all audiences.
- Recommended time: throughout the year.
The Neolithic Aula
Inaugurated in 2003 at the Guimarán-El Valle Rural Initiative Centre, the Aula is designed to complement the visit to the dolphins. The visit starts with an audio-visual about life in the Neolithic: the hunters’ and gatherers’ economy, the beginnings of agriculture and the new funeral ritual.
Then we walk through reproductions of homes, things, the funeral world and the everyday tasks of the time, with replicas of weapons and tools and an explanation of how a dolm was built.
