Shipowners ‘, Boatmen’ and Seamen’s Quarter

Shipowners ‘, Boatmen’ and Seamen’s Quarter

Poem of the entry panel to the Barrio de los Armadores, Patrones y Marineros (J.M. García)

There are elderly people, there are young people, there are almost children, there are also trists and arrogants. All between the sea and the sky, with the moon walking along its course. They merge with each other on the bridge and deck. A mahón, rancho, payarón, pellejo wine, quartteron tobacco and flakes campaign, layered with the sea and the sachet. Skippers, drivers, photo drivers, beam seamen, etc. His figures, as well as detached angels, on the crispy timber.

Shipowners

They were the owners of the vessels. They were people who understood of the sea, in some cases they could be wealthy fishermen, but they were usually the owners of the canning factories, which thus secured the raw material for their products.

The Patrons

They are the people who manage and govern the vessels. There were two types: The coastal master ( who directs the manoeuvres to and from the port) and the fishing master (the expert in managing the vessel in the fishing ground, where the fishing operations were carried out).

The seamen

This is the crew of the fishing vessel. Some of them had specialised tasks such as the ship’s picker and driver, which were dedicated to the handling and maintenance of the ship’s engine, but most of them were labourers carrying out fishing tasks.
