St Stephen’s Church of Guimarán

Located in the Bo. The Guimarán Fund, in the area known as La Nozaleda, due to the existence of several nozales in the place, years ago.

The site is accessible from the AS-19, Gijón-Avilés, P.K. 6,300, where the CE-6 Serín road is taken to the left and about 3.5 km into the El Fondo neighbourhood and the asphalted road is taken to the right, about 200 m from the church in question.

The Templo is rectangular in shape and has a square header, very much of the Asturian popular style, and has undergone several alterations, especially in the cabildo, which has been replaced by a cubic body that is virtually closed and seated at the front of the façade. This church was burned during the Spanish Civil War and subsequently reconstructed. It was one of the donations made by King Alfonso III El Magno and his wife Queen Jimena to the Church of Oviedo.

Inside it there is a canvas from the Virgin of Guadeloupe, which was donated by a son of the emigrating parish on Mexican land and restored in 1996.

There is also a Parochial Pantheon of the Villar, dating back to the nineteenth century, specifically 1820. The last burial was by Francisco Quirós de Villar on 3 June 1919.

In 1820, burial inside the Church was prohibited and carried out in the Cemetery annexed to the Temple.

The festival of San Esteban, patron de Guimarán, takes place on 26 December.

Another festival held for years in the church in question was Race Day. On 12 October, organised in collaboration with the Mexico House in Asturias.
