The ermite of San Antonio

The ermita of San Antonio was above the cliffs of the promontory of the Punta del Cuerno de Candás. The successive cliff collapses left its edge only 60 centimetres, and in 2011, once stabilisation of the cliff had been ruled out due to its extraordinary difficulty, it was decided to dismantle stone to stone in order to bring it to a location nearby but further away from the edge.

Categorised for years as a popular renaissance work from the second half of the sixteenth century, the chronology of the building was delayed until 1615 when an inscription with that date was located at the head-end, during the ortho-photo sweep prior to disassembly. The capilla is included in the urban planning catalogue of the municipality with a comprehensive protection level.

From its location, it dominates a small outflow called ‘Punta beneath the Santo’ or ‘de San Antonio’ by fishermen. It is home to the image of San Antonio, a saint protecting lovers and noviazgos, a patron of pilgrims and a lawyer for lost causes.

Saint Antonio’s Festival

The festivity of the sandy is celebrated on 13 June, with religious events in the ermita and a JIRA in the vicinity with the auction of the ‘Ramu’ and distribution of the preñao bollu and the wine bottle. As a colloquium, in the evening there is an exhibition of Danza Prima at the expense of the seamen.
