The Municipal Public Library Carlos González Posada was established by Ministerial Order of 23 April 1949, however it only opened in April 1955, occupying a room in the former Casa del Pueblo, now de la Falange and Sindicato Vertical.
His first library was Mr Eduardo Noriega Hoyos and its operation is governed by an agreement signed with the Coordinating Centre for Libraries in Oviedo, which reports to the Directorate-General for Archives and Libraries.
The functions of the Coordinating Centre shall be to carry out checks, provide technical advice and send books and, on the part of the City Council, to prepare and maintain the premises and the salary of the person responsible, undertaking to open the premises every day for at least three and a half hours.
In 1959, José González Gutiérrez was appointed as a library and remained in office until 1964 when he retired due to illness.
During the 60s the Library had constant problems with the premises (droplets, unpainted walls), which were highlighted in numerous communications from the Coordinating Centre to the Municipality reminding it of its obligation to maintain the premises and the need to seek a solution.
This seemed to be the move to the newly created Institute of Medium Education. In the meantime, owing to defects and the library’s illness, the centre remained closed for much of 1964.
Mr José Ma Álvarez Rodríguez was appointed to replace him at the end of this year and would remain in charge of the Library until the end of 1986.
The transfer to the Institute never took place as the premises offered by Education were half of the existing premises and the Coordination Centre rejected the proposal.
The Library continued to languise in an inadequate room and with increasingly obsolete funds, there was only one attempt at renovation in 1970 when the Coordinating Centre proposed to the Municipality the transfer of a plot of land for the construction of a new Library, with the State bearing the financing of the building, furniture and increased funds. In principle, the Councillor considered the proposal with great interest and promised to start the efforts to obtain a plot of land, but the project turned to sleep the dream of the just ones. With the democratic municipal elections things started to change, as a first step the Library was moved to a room within the new House of Culture and the purchase of books started with the intention of renewing the fund.
In 1986, the post of librarian was advertised following an open competition, and in January the following year the current library, Carmen Dintén Sánchez, took office. The library extended the timetable, purchased daily newspapers and magazines, continued with the expansion of collections, especially the consultation and the very old children’s collections, subscribed to the BOE and BOPA,... and started to organise the collection.
The number of users and books increased progressively until the premises did not increase further. In the meantime, the municipality had purchased a palacete in the centre of the village as its future library and, following its renovation and fitting-out, it was inaugurated as a Library on 20 May 1998.
