The former school in Guimarán-Valle was built in 1891. At the time of its creation, it was a school for children with exclusive use for this purpose and hosting of the teacher.
She was founded and built by Fructuoso Busto, a natural neighbour of the parish in question, who was enriched from his stay in Havana, to whom he emigrated in his youth.
The magnificent building, Casa School, with a robust structure, two floors, courtyard, bell hood, furnished with furniture and teaching material, became the property of the municipality by donation from the founder.
Within a few days of the opening of the children’s school, the residents of those parishes applied to the municipal authorities for the urgent creation of the girls’ school, which was accepted by providing 420 pesetas from the municipal budget, but the rent for the premises and the dwelling had to be borne by the applicants.
Shortly afterwards, due to the teacher’s protests about the inadequate facilities and the lack of a home for her person, the girls’ school was closed, after eight months it was re-opened to close again shortly afterwards until a part of the boys’ school was finally set up for girls.
This interim solution remained operational until September 1924, when the construction of the new building was awarded to the Cantabrian contractor Benjamín García Fernández, who built the school attached to the children’s school, forming a single body, which was accessed through the same door.
The official opening in September 1925 was attended by the mass village and the Mayor of Carreño, at the time Mr Jesús García Prendes.
These old schools are now homes. The building owned by the families of Casa La Viuda de Guimarán, the sisters García López. This family donated the land where the new schools were built in the Barrio de la Vega in the Valle, swapping the site with Carreño City Council to build the new schools for the old ones’ building.
