Priendes Schools

They are located in Barrio Barreres, number 7 in Prendes. To reach them, it is sufficient to take the AS-19 Gijón-Avilés and shortly after passing the El Empalme crossing, we enter this neighbourhood, where we can see the eye-catching building on the road by right hand.

This construction was inaugurated on 9-05-1905, but works, led by architect Bellido, started two years earlier, in January 1903. It is a beautiful and magnificent stone building, with a central body and two sides.

At the time of its construction, the first of the flats was dedicated to the housing of the master and the master, which was filled by a bell and his bell weighing 90 kilograms. The two remaining bodies, on the ground floor, would serve as separate classrooms for both sexes. At the top of the frontispia embedded in the wall, the national shield and on the entrance gates of both schools, under their masts, were overflowing the flags of Spain, which would then appear on all the newly constructed school buildings, deployed during the hours of the classroom, in accordance with the provisions of a Royal Decree of 1893, which until then had not been complied with due to the precariousness of the schools.

The inauguration of these schools, which were to be used by the children of the villages of Albandi and Prendes, was an event that meant an extraordinary event not only for both parishes, but for the whole municipality.

It was attended by numerous people, chaired by the Vice-Rector of the University of Oviedo, Fermín Canella Secades and the Mayor of Carreño, Higinio Fuentes, the municipal council in plenary session, the Local Council for Primary Instruction, Clero and Juan Estrada Nora, Member of the Provincial Council.

The building is currently the headquarters of the ‘En Prendes’ business incubator and it is planned to expand its uses in the future.
